Research Planning, Inc. (RPI)
is providing the National Park Service (NPS) with support in developing
the NPS Spill Response Program. We are preparing the environmental
components of a Draft NPS Annex to be used by NPS units to supplement
information in Area Contingency Plans (ACPs) for oil spill response
and preparedness. As part of this effort, we are producing: 1) maps
showing the boundaries of the NPS unit, 2) maps of sensitive areas
and text on resources at risk within the NPS unit, and 3) protection
priorities and response recommendations within the NPS unit. We
have completed the draft Annex for the Georgia NPS units and Gateway
National Recreational Area.
We are currently working on the Great Lakes NPS units located within
Region 5 of the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) ACPs.
In addition to the work discussed above, we will also be evaluating
potential spill risks to each Park unit. A set of maps will be produced
that depict known risks that are within close proximity to each
park boundary. Risks may include above/below ground storage tanks,
historical spill data, pipelines, and oil/gas wells locations. We
are also compiling boater education materials for the Region 5 Park
units to help inform private and commercial vessel operators on
best practices for handling waste (oil, trash, etc.) safely within
park waters.
